Zachariah 1:12-17 – King James Version (KJV)

12 Then the angel of the Lord answered and said, O Lord of hosts, how long wilt thou not have mercy on Jerusalem and on the cities of Judah, against which thou hast had indignation these threescore and ten years?

13 And the Lord answered the angel that talked with me with good words and comfortable words.

14 So the angel that communed with me said unto me, Cry thou, saying, Thus saith the Lord of hosts; I am jealous for Jerusalem and for Zion with a great jealousy.

15 And I am very sore displeased with the heathen that are at ease: for I was but a little displeased, and they helped forward the affliction.

16 Therefore thus saith the Lord; I am returned to Jerusalem with mercies: my house shall be built in it, saith the Lord of hosts, and a line shall be stretched forth upon Jerusalem.

17 Cry yet, saying, Thus saith the Lord of hosts; My cities through prosperity shall yet be spread abroad; and the Lord shall yet comfort Zion, and shall yet choose Jerusalem.

Exposition & Application

The passage selected for this week’s comfort [1:8-17] is the conclusion of

the first of the eight visions that Zechariah saw [1:7-6:8]. Let us notice the following phrases in the passage.

V13. The angel spoke, “with good and comforting words.”

V17. “The Lord will again comfort Zion”

The need for comforting words and for comfort presupposes and accepts that Zion is in a state of discomfort – or one could say, a state of dis-ease.

Let’s observe the following points in the passage

1. Zion was in a state of dis-ease

2. The vision was designed to bring encouragement, cheer and comfort

to Zion.

3. Zion then, typifies God people today.

4. God’s people today can be assured that in time of trouble, discomfort

and dis-ease God will provide them with comfort.

A Deeper look at the Passage

To bring comfort again to Zion, presupposes that Zion had moved from comfort to a state of discomfort and needed to be re-comforted. The calling of Zechariah [520 BC] by God was to proclaim the message that God will comfort His people again. And why would God bother to comfort His people again? Because of His great unquenchable love for his people.

Read again verse 14 and notice the word, “great.” “I am zealous for Jerusalem, and for Zion with great zeal” [NKJV]; or “I am jealous for Jerusalem and for Zion with a great jealousy” [KJV].

God’s Great Jealousy

Unfortunately, the word Jealousy in today’s vocabulary has negative overtones. It suggests selfishness, envy, and malicious resentment and apathy to what others have. But the jealousy of God – although just as intense, is quite the opposite. It is His intense, protective concern for what is rightfully His: His name; His land; His city; His house; and even more so, His people. These are is and He will defend and protect His people against all assailants seen and unseen, simply because of His great unconditional love His people.

God’s great jealousy speaks of God’s great love. That God will comfort His people is predicated on the fact of His unshakeably great zeal or His unfathomable great love for them.

Application

My message to you dear fellow believers; people of God is this. And I speak upon the authority of God’s word. Despite the present dis-ease, and the discomfort in brings; take courage. Be comforted in knowing that your heavenly Father loves you and He cares for you. He will defend and protect you with all the resources of heaven.

Remember the words of the poet:

Be not dismayed whate’er betide
God will take care of you
Beneath His wings of love abide
God will take care of you

God will take care of you
Through every day, o’er all the way
He will take care of you
God will take care of you

No matter what may be the test
God will take care of you
Lean, weary one, upon His breast
God will take care of you

God will take care of you
Through every day, o’er all the way
He will take care of you
God will take care of you

He will take care of you
God will take care of you

With all this disease on the land threatening our homes, our lives and our livelihoods, through it all, let’s lean to trust in Jesus. For the Lord will comfort Zion. The Lord will comfort His people. He will comfort you.

Thus saith the Lord of hosts; My cities through prosperity shall yet be spread abroad; and the Lord shall yet comfort Zion, and shall yet choose Jerusalem.
